# Return Prohibited

Return Prohibited lets retailers mark specific products as non-returnable. When a product is flagged as return prohibited, it is excluded from the returns flow and cannot be returned after purchase.

### Return Prohibited configuration

To enable this feature, create or reuse a product attribute that indicates whether a product can be returned.

The attribute should be a product-level **Yes/No** field.

After the attribute exists:

1. Go to **ESW → Checkout → Product Metadata Items**.
2. Map the product attribute to the **Returns Prohibited Attribute** setting.
3. Save the configuration.

### Attribute behavior

The mapped attribute controls whether the product is treated as return prohibited.

If the attribute is not set, the extension treats the value as `false`, which means returns are allowed.

The following values are treated as `false`:

* empty
* `0`
* `false`
* `null`

If the attribute is explicitly set to `true`, the product is marked as non-returnable.

{% hint style="info" %}
If you already use a return eligibility attribute in Adobe Commerce, you can reuse that attribute instead of creating a new one.
{% endhint %}

### How the flag is used

When a product is marked as return prohibited:

* the value is included in the preorder payload as `isReturnProhibited`
* the flag is passed into the order data
* downstream processes can use the flag to identify non-returnable items

### Returns workflow behavior

Products flagged as non-returnable are excluded from the returns experience.

This means:

* the product cannot be selected in the returns portal
* the shopper cannot submit a return request for that item
* return eligibility stays aligned with the product attribute configured in Adobe Commerce

### Expected result

After setup is complete:

* return-prohibited products are clearly identified during checkout and order processing
* non-returnable items are excluded from the returns flow
* retailers can manage return eligibility through a standard product attribute

## Querying This Documentation
If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter, and the optional `goal` query parameter:

```
GET https://developer.esw.com/adobe-commerce-magento/additional-features/return-prohibited.md?ask=<question>&goal=<endgoal>
```

`ask` is the immediate question: it should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
`goal` is optional and describes the broader end goal you are ultimately trying to accomplish on behalf of the user. GitBook uses it to tailor the answer towards what is most useful for that goal.

The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
